Agroforestry Network – a new climate initiative for Agenda 2030

Agroforestry, a multifunctional and climate-smart method of integrating trees into agricultural landscapes, plays an important role in a number of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and in their implementation Agenda 2030. The new Agroforestry Network, launched on November 22, 2016 was initiated to make agroforestry more recognised among stakeholders in the development sector and to offer knowledge exchange between agroforestry experts. Based in Sweden, it is a network  for international agroforestry practice that brings together experts from different organisations and institutions in Sweden and abroad.

In total 50 participants from academia, the private sector, NGOs and various governmental institutions took part in the launch. Sven-Erik Bucht, the Swedish Minister of Rural Affairs, gave an inspiring opening speech in which he emphasised the importance of agroforestry in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals. “By joining together in a network, much more can be accomplished to save the soils” Bucht said.

The initiators of the network: Vi-skogen, SLU Global, SIANI and Focali published an opinion piece in Göteborgs-Posten ahead of the launch. Read it here.
