Films by the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden were awarded gold and silver in the category of “environmental documentary” at the World Media Festival in Hamburg on the 15th of March.

The interactive film “Aspen”, which received silver, is produced in collaboration with the advisory site Skogskunskap.se. It’s meant to inspire forest owners and forest machine operators to take account of the aspen trees, which host unusually diverse variety of insects, lichens, mosses, birds and mammals.

The film’s interactivity means that viewers can click on different objects in the movie, which then stops the main movie and  provides viewers with in-depth information about a certain object in the form of a clip, an interview or close-ups.

– Great fun, and I hope the prize can create even more attention around this beautiful, important and exciting forest tree, says Jan Weslien at the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden, who participates in the film.

“The Forest – Is It enough?” received the first prize in the same category. Anticipating rapid bioeconomic development, the film shows how expectations on the Swedish forest grow faster than the forest itself. The film was produced as part of the Future Forests research program, which gathers researchers from the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden, Umeå University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The winning film team consists of the three companies – Bitzer Productions AB, Henrik Skarstedt AB and Pantheon AB, all based in Uppsala, Sweden.
