How does violent conflict impact biodiversity? SIANI’s expert group on Land Rights in Latin America will contribute to a side event on the topic during the upcoming UN biodiversity conference COP16.
On 29 October, the side event ‘Biodiversity, Land Use Change and the Implications for Conflict in Latin America’ will be held at the 16th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16) in Calí, Colombia. It is organised by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, SIPRI, and SIANI’s expert group on Land Rights in Latin America.
The event builds on the work of the expert group and will focus on the impact of violent conflict on biodiversity and explore strategies to enhance food security in regions affected by conflict, land degradation, and climate change, focusing on Latin America. It will feature an interactive panel discussion on the security challenges arising from biodiversity loss due to land use changes and propose measures to address these issues. The goal is to attract a diverse group of participants from scientific and policy backgrounds, fostering multidisciplinary dialogue aimed at developing innovative solutions to these complex challenges.
