On 29 October, the SIANI-Focali collaboration will support a side event at the UN Biodiversity conference COP16 in Cali, Colombia. The event, organized by Stockholm Environment Institute and partners, is an opportunity to learn more about bioeconomy and non-timber forest products (NTFP).

The event Bioeconomy for biodiversity: challenges in value chains of non-timber forest products is bilingual in English and Spanish and takes place in the conference’s Green Zone. Expert speakers will discuss how biodiversity can drive the bioeconomy and create new opportunities in tropical countries.

A key topic is the role of non-timber forest products (NTFP) in the bioeconomy. These products – e.g. fruits, seeds, flowers, resins and other plant resources – are deeply embedded in natural ecosystems and the traditional practices of local communities. Incorporating these resources into the bioeconomy offers a pathway to sustainable development but also poses complex logistics, technology, sustainability, and innovation challenges.
