Both the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Paris Agreement on climate change recognize the importance of human rights and the biodiversity framework especially states that its implementation requires a Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA). An HRBA ensures that policies, governance and actions actively seek ways to support and promote human rights in their design, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, learning and funding.
This event during COP16 explores how an HRBA can be adopted for biodiversity and climate action. It builds on insights from the joint dialogue series Inclusive Conversations held in the six months leading up to COP. The dialogue process included preparatory workshop (in-person and online), with different stakeholders, including Indigenous Peoples and local communities, women, youths, NGOs, State Parties, researchers and practitioners.
Lessons from these conversations underpin this concluding multi-actor dialogue at COP16. Topics include how to identify power dynamics, intersectionality, inequalities and discrimination as well as how to provide transparency and strong accountability through monitoring, evaluation and reporting.
