LARRI Webinar A New Green Grab: Land Rights and Climate Change

Aerial views of Tribudi Syukur Village, West Lampung Regency. Lampung.

For the second LARRI Webinar of the spring semester 2025 we are happy to present
Professor Jens Friis Lund from the Department of Food and Resource Economics, section
for Global Development, at the University of Copenhagen. In his talk he will address the
entanglement of land rights and climate change mitigation and how related policies and
deals bear out the fears of a new green grab to respect global climate thresholds. Global
climate scenarios have long been criticized for their reliance on large-scale carbon removal
and other land-based mitigation options to respect the Paris Agreement temperature
thresholds. An emergent body of studies of national climate plans as well as recent
large-scale land deals indicate that the futures envisaged in the scenarios might become
reality. This demands urgent scholarly as well as political attention.
