Rent mjöl i soppåsen?

Thursdag 4 juli 11:00-11:45, Sverige i Världen, Donnersgatan 6 Visby

Migration is primarily directed to neighbouring countries where the pressure on natural resources is high. In Africa, Uganda receives around 3000 refugees per day and the country has quickly turned into one of the countries that receive most refugees in the world. The country differs from other receiving countries due to the governments’ decision to offer refugees rights to land and the right to move freely. The decision was made to encourage economic activity between refugees and their home countries. But what does this decision mean for the refugees, their home-countries and the donor community?

Our seminar will bring attention to the potential of migration as a positive force for sustainable rural development and the local economy. Using Uganda as an example we will shine light on how migration can contribute to economic development and the local communities’ resilience towards the effects of climate change, the importance of humanitarian aid organizations for the integrity of the refugees as well as how civil society can support migrating families with knowledge to run sustainable food production, for example through agroforestry.

Participants:

  • Carin Jämtin, Director General, Sida
  • Elizabeth Mwiyeria, Country Manager Kenya, Vi-agroforestry
  • Anne Poulsen, Director, UN:s World Food Programmes nordic office
  • Annika Åhnberg, Chairperson, Swedish International Agricultural Network Initiative, SIANI
  • Henrik Franklin, Lead Portfolio Advisor East and Southern Africa Division, International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD)
  • Madeleine Fogde, Programme Manager, SIANI
