Population growth poses many risks, but it also creates a lot of opportunities, and urban agriculture is one of them. Growing urban population with increasing incomes creates demand for a more diversified diet with a substantial fraction of animal products.
In the tropics, there are vast areas of degraded land, which can be restored back into higher and sustainable production with tree planting. In this way previously degraded lands could play a key role for improved food security and at the same time offer various other benefits.
The Expert Group kick-started with the inception meeting on the 12th of June 2014 and set the timeline for the future activities. The ways to increase public awareness about land restoration were the main focus of this meeting.
The background to the bioeconomy expert group is that progress towards knowledge-based bieconomies is increasingly seen as a path towards sustainable economic growth based on renewable resources. This implies economies moving away from fossil fuels and increasingly utilizing renewable resources as base in all sectors of society, such as industry, energy and transport sectors.
On the 10th of September 2014 there will be a seminar at the University of Gothenburg: "Securing Forest and Community Land Rights - Challenges, Trends and Ways Forward" with the aim to contribute to knowledge sharing and discuss ways forward and concrete roles that different actors can play to advance forests and community land rights.
2015 is the deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. There has been a lot of progress done in some areas, but major challenges remain. At the Rio+20 conference world leaders agreed to draft a new set of goals for post-2015 development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
