Many countries have school meal programmes to ensure food security and nutrition and support the ability of children to learn. An outcome from the UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) was the launch of the School Meals Coalition: Nutrition, Health and Education for Every Child supported by several OECD countries.
Following on from the Making Better Policies for Food Systems report the OECD’s Trade and Agriculture Directorate is now focusing on how to overcome evidence gaps in food systems to support policy makers around the world develop better policies for food systems. School meal programmes are included as part of a deep dive on food assistance programmes in OECD countries. As a knowledge partner to the UNFSS process the OECD has convened this webinar and anticipates discussions covering some of the following topics: What is known about the actual performance of school meal programmes? Are these programmes being designed in a coherent manner with the different food systems dimensions such as food security and nutrition, livelihoods and environmental sustainability being taken into consideration? How do countries evaluate the effectiveness of programmes? What are key priorities for school meal programmes and the likely implications? What are the challenges and opportunities for these programmes and how are these being addressed? What are future opportunities to work together with the OECD?
