Welcome to a seminar where University of Nairobi Professor Karuti Kanyinga will share his reading of emerging contestations around changing dryland governance and use in East Africa. More specifically, the seminar will explore how to make sense of the seemingly contradictory trends of institutional reform to formalize customary communal land rights on one hand; and fragmentation of pastoralist commons through expanding infrastructure, natural resource extraction, and agricultural practices on the other. The seminar will be organized as a conversation between professor Kanyinga and land governance- and east african studies scholars at the University of Gothenburg.
Format: Hybrid seminar. You can join either via Zoom (https://gu-se.zoom.us/j/69427441522) or IRL at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg (Room C 417).
