It is once again time for Focali members, partners, and friends in our wider community to meet around current interlinked forest, climate and livelihood challenges. The Focali annual meeting, to be held in Gothenburg the 1–2 December, is the first in-person annual meeting since the memorable Focali 10-year anniversary meeting held in 2019.
After many online meetings, we now encourage in-person participation for this annual meeting, to keep up the vibrant discussions and networking across disciplines and sectors. Participation will however be possible via zoom as well.

10.15 Opening talks: Rise or reduction of commodity-driven deforestation in Brazil and Indonesia
Brazil did manage to reduce commodity-driven deforestation drastically, but now it is on the way up. Indonesia has recently seen drastic reductions in deforestation for palm oil. What can we learn from these experiences and how do we achieve more long-term reductions in deforestation? After the two opening talks a broader panel will follow where lessons from the work of The Tenure Facility in Democratic Republic of The Congo will be added to the discussion.

Researchers and policy makers share lessons and challenges from different angles and levels in this interface. A panel will be followed by a joint discussion on ways to improve this dialogue and the importance of research-based input for greater impact within our field. This session will in addition bring up current difficulties in this interface and discuss ways forward.

This session will provide space to summarise the conference day and discuss current developments, policy windows and other openings ahead where Focali and our broader community of partners and friends could engage to have greater impact on urgent and intertwined challenges of our time.

The aim of the workshop is:
- To pick up themes discussed during the conference day and dig deeper into how we can take the discussions forward in our network activities, research collaborations or outreach.
- To identify and catalyse areas with potential for enhanced collaboration within the network between members in different research environments and/or with actors in other sectors.
- Via mutual learning equip participants with enriched understanding and/or tools for research – policy – practice interactions and outreach of research findings.
- To provide Focali with strategic guidance and ideas for 2023 as well as ideas to develop in the new phase of the Focali – SIANI collaboration and other potential partnerships ahead.
