Every year the SIANI secretariat organises a meeting to provide an opportunity for members to interact with each other and to reflect on the work-plan of the year ahead. This year we have chosen nutrition as a theme for Annual Meeting. We invite you to explore how our network and its members can contribute to the global nutrition agenda.
One in three people worldwide suffer from malnutrition. In stark contrast with the objective to end all forms of malnutrition by 2030 this negative trend is increasing.
Malnutrition takes different forms: undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, as well as overweight, obesity and nutrition related non-communicable diseases. Malnutrition affects all countries, whether developed or developing. Different forms of malnutrition co-exist within countries, communities, households and individuals. Malnutrition hampers brain development and health. It is a heavy burden on our economies. People who are malnourished perform poorly at work or at school and can’t improve their lives.
Every human being has the right to adequate food. However, we only can realize this right if we have a food system that facilitates healthy and sustainable food choices. A food system that accommodates the needs of vulnerable people with specific nutrient requirements, like young children, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, the elderly and ill people, or people with less control over their diets because of poverty and marginalization.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2016–2025 the United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition. Governments, inter-governmental organisations, civil society, the private sector, academia and other actors are invited to make commitments and advance on the global nutrition agenda, following the recommendations of the 2030 Global Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Rome Declaration on Nutrition. At this year’s Annual Meeting we will follow the nutrition trail to look for clues to sustainable development!
We understand that not all of our members will be able to join us in person in Stockholm. The event will be live-streamed and, if there is enough online participants, we will have a workshop-webinar for those participating online. Please, make sure to sign up!
